This easy to implement post will teach you all about hosting and writing with Bluehost and WordPress! Sharing your ideas with the world doesn’t have to be daunting, it can be quite lucrative as a matter of fact. With blogging you have control! Personally, I want to be traveling, growing my own food and bettering people’s lives. I have no desire to sit behind a desk, realizing someone else’s dream. If that’s not your cup of tea either, the sooner you start as an entrepreneur the sooner you can stop living a life you don’t enjoy and take life for a ride.
What is Hosting?
Hosting provides a secure server where your website’s information is stored. It’s also what makes your website available online. Bluehost has done a phenomenal job streamlining the setup process. Starting a blog will make a difference to your finances. The investment is minimal and refundable. With Bluehost you get to work with a company that stands behind their product 100%. Most importantly, you get to explore a new source for making money. There’s nothing to regret.
Why is WordPress.org the Blogging Platform For You?
Endless themes, widgets, and plugins are available for free! Let that sink in. I used WordPress.com and unfortunately it was a waste of time. With wordpress.com you are bound by endless site restrictions and petty payments. If you are considering starting a blog, get hosting from the start. The domain is FREE with Bluehost and so is WordPress.org. If you have been struggling with creating your own professional looking site, WordPress.org helps it come together in minutes.
If you’re getting excited already have no fear! I’ll get you started with or without an existing WordPress account. This process is simple and proves you don’t need to pay for set up.
Think of Your Domain Name
Start a list of favorite words and phrases. What do you like about other blog names? Are they descriptive? Are they inspiring? What do you want to convey to your reader? Think about what you want to carry out and what you want to represent.
*Choose a domain that is easy to type, say and remember.
*Use a .com domain. It looks more professional than a .biz or .net. If your blog domain name isn’t available on .com go back to the drawing board because it’s important.
*Remember it’s a blog name not a sentence. Keep it to a couple of words.
*Be mindful of typecasting. ‘Saralovescoupons’ sounds like a pretty good name, right? Your blog might have coupon help, amazing recipes and tons of kids activities. However you don’t want to direct people to your site just based on coupons, because your other content might get missed.
Bluehost is recognized as one of the most affordable and reliable hosting companies available. If you have a site and you’ve been struggling to grow, getting self hosting and monetizing is probably the push it needs. You can start your own blog with Bluehost for $3.95 a month. That’s less than $50.00 a year to create a new lifestyle for yourself and family, and a whole lot cheaper than any other business or storefront. You will also receive a free domain ($15.00 value) with an exclusive offer through The Rising Damsel.
*Don’t let sites like blogger claim up on your creation anymore! No more domains with .blogspot.com in your URL! Use the widget below to see if your .com is available. This will NOT initiate purchase, it’s just a fun way to check if your dream domain is available.
Let’s Get Started!
Choose the Basic Plan
The Basic Plan is perfect for new bloggers. Your biggest savings will be by choosing the 36 month option. Bluehost offers a full refund on yearly plans. Buying upfront you are 100% guaranteed.
Register Your New Domain Name
It’s completely FREE with your annual hosting plan through The Rising Damsel. If you already have a domain name and plan to transfer to Bluehost, take care of that during this step.
Package Add-on Page
For package information I would recommend SiteLock Domain Security to keep your personal information safe. Next you will enter credit card information and create a secure password for your site.
Get that plastic out!
I know your excitement has built!!
You did it! CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You’re the proud owner of a squeaky clean new domain!
Selecting next will prompt you to create a secure password for your new domain.
Next you will be able to choose your Theme. Have no fear you can skip this or change it later.
Now you are brought to your new WordPress.org dashboard:
You can launch by clicking the Bluehost button on the top right of your dashboard. I didn’t launch my blog until I had my categories set up. With the WordPress dashboard you can create, tweak, and save before you launch to give yourself time to produce something you are proud of.
Tips and Tricks for Profits
I’m not going to leave you now! Below I have some great basics for you to focus on when you start your blog. These are necessary welcome elements to include so your reader can quickly get to know you and start to trust your brand! Please be aware this information is for a site on WordPress.org.
Theme / Layout
Your layout is important. It allows a reader to analyze your site’s worth immediately. I’ve been blogging a long, long time, and I’ve spent 100’s of hours trying to achieve professional layouts without purchasing themes. It never works. Enter (aptly named) Genesis Framework made by Studiopress. It’s beloved by businesses and blog owners, and I can see why with customizable features, flawless professional appearance, and a logical set up. It can’t be beat. It’s actually the layout and theme I use here on The Rising Damsel. Their helpful guides known as Genesis Code Snippets go above and beyond to help give you detailed instructions on anything you could ever want to change.
Make a Logo and Add as Header
This is your first impression on your reader. Whatever header you decide to use make sure that your blog’s name is easy to read! Edit your photo in Canva or in Picmonkey to create a logo within minutes. *It’s a good idea to create brand cohesion by setting one of your logo colors as a ‘link’ color.* To add your header, you will need to click Appearance –> Customize. The customize dashboard will look different from the previous menu. Select ‘Header Image’ and then click ‘Add New’. The image will be resized to fit automatically.
Profile Picture and Welcome Message
Everyone will want to see your beautiful face! Think of something catchy to put under your picture to introduce you and your blog.
Picmonkey is going to be your new best friends, which is a great relationship because the program is user friendly. Insert your picture by navigating to Appearance –> Widgets and searching ‘Image (Jetpack)’. Drag your widget to where you would like it to appear on your blog while still in the widgets section.
In general your life experiences can be what motivates you to write everyday. Here are some questions to get you thinking: What’s important to you? Who is in your life and how do they influence your day-to-day activities? What are your goals? Where do you live? How do you live? What are you changing? What do you enjoy? Answers to these questions will keep you motivated. Create your own niche. You don’t have to conform to anything. What’s important is that you blog consistently. In connecting with your own genuine content your readers will relate to your sincerity and keep coming back for more!
Pages in Your Menu Bar
Let your reader learn about you with an ‘About’ category. What makes you unique, and should I trust you? You’re creating credibility as well as making a friend. Add pictures and make yourself memorable. This is a great area to highlight your credentials, achievements, and where your blog has been featured. This is a prime space for your favorite posts to get your readers involved.
Make it easy for your readers and affiliates to contact you with a ‘Contact’ page. You never know when someone will come knocking on your blog door to set up ongoing ad space. You might even score some freebies! If your information isn’t easily accessible you could get passed up. It’s a good idea to get an email address specifically for your blog.
When deciding what to write about, blog categories will provide clarity. It also allows your reader to quickly scan your site and zero in on what interests them. *First you need to write a post, and only then will you be able to add it to your menu bar.*
Think about your categories as you would Pinterest boards.
Sometimes our interests find a way to co-mingle. As you develop your blog, you can introduce sub categories. This helps to break down the category even further.
Highlight all the tools that your blog uses. A few examples: Where and how do you earn extra money? What programs do you use to edit your photographs? What are your favorite stores and brand names? It all comes down to what do you use and what works for your blog? Resources are needed from chefs, mommy bloggers, crafters and health gurus to fashionistas and tech bloggers. Success is inspiring. Other people are going to want to know what reputable companies helped you gain that success. Don’t forget to add your affiliate links!
