resume help recruiter secrets revealedFive seconds…. You have exactly five seconds to impress a recruiter with your resume. That’s not very much, is it? How does anyone get hired with such ridiculous standards? Answer: You tailor your resume to the job you actually want! With these recruiter tips, you will stand out amongst all the other candidates.

When you really want to get hired, you need to look at your resume first

A recruiter might be sitting there with 1000’s of resumes sitting in front of them. All with similar qualifications. What will make your resume stand out so you can get hired? It comes down to some basics that you can implement today. Keep reading to find out what every recruiter is looking for.

If You Want to Get Hired You Need to Research the Position You Apply For

If you don’t know how to describe your current position, check out the current job postings on Indeed. A flood of programs, experience, and situations from your present and past jobs will come back to you.

You can also use the job posting for keywords. If the job posting says “Seeking Ambitious…” and your resume states “Ambitious….” it could subconsciously catch the recruiter’s eye.

Do you really respect a coworker? Why don’t you check out how they describe their current position on Linkedin or ask for a copy of their resume?

If all else fails, any good recruiter appreciates excitement interjected into a résumé they’re reviewing.

When I see “Excited, team worker ready for the next step …” I’m going to give the rest of your résumé a chance.

I guarantee when you research your own position, you will think…OH! I did do that.

Want to Get Hired? Bring Up Discrepancies and Tailor Your Resume to What You’re Applying to

It’s ok to discuss a step back in your career on your résumé. You never know what a company is looking for.

Someone with a history of a great work ethic could beat out someone with relevant experience if current employees aren’t accomplishing what the company needs.

If you seem overqualified you might actually be hurting your chances. It doesn’t hurt to address your intent in a cover letter.

A header such as “Accomplished director ready to help your company get to the next level of excellence” probably won’t get you a call back for a customer service position.

You as an applicant might be desperate, but as a recruiter, I still want to offer you a good job that seems like a fit for your experience.

    1. Create a professional email address. No more “party4life@” etc.
    2. Use reverse chronological order to list your past jobs.
    3. Present the most professional title. “Data Processor” vs “Data Management Specialist,” paint two different employee types. (Do an internet search to a.k.a job titles)
    4. Describe how you contributed to the company’s overall success in each past role in addition to your responsibilities.
    5. Edit, revise and use spell check! (I see so many spelling mistakes.)
